It’s been over two decades since Dexy and The Midnight Runners burst onto the scene with Come On Eileen, pretty much their only memorable hit (cause really who remembers Geno?). Dropping The Midnight Runners part and just going with Dexys, the band is back with a whole new album.

Right off the bat the album hits you with Now, a track that is destined to be the bands next Come on Eileen. The tune is highly energetic, a bit repetitive in the way that makes all good pop songs what they are, and created simply for as good time. Unfortunately after that this song the rest of the album falls into a funk that it never really digs itself out of.

If your familiar with Richard Cheese, a lounge act reminiscent of Weird Al, then you’ll get where I’m going with this. Each song after Now, vocally, just seems like a parody from a lounge singer like Cheese, only this time Cheese forgot that he was a comedy act and took himself way to seriously.

Even when the album takes on dark themes you can’t really take it to seriously because the singing is so passé and, I can’t lie, not that great, that you end up dismissing any seriousness about the tune no matter how dark. Mind you the album does read like the diary of a shunned, misunderstood person, but it never reaches any kind of pinnacle due to it’s laughable delivery on vocals. No doubt the band will make a second attempt in their comeback, but this one won’t be the one to break them onto the scene again. As always final judgment is yours. Enjoy.
