Having been a huge Depeche Mode fan back in my middle school days I was more then excited to pick up the new EP from Pop Electronic act Feathers, who will be opening for Depeche Mode on their current tour.

The EP is four tracks and features two new songs, Wild Love and Only One, along with two tracks taken from their last album and given a bit of a spin (an alternate version and a remix). So how did it sound?

I absolutely flipped for Wild Love. I couldn’t quite put my finger on it, but then it hit me. The track sounds like it could have fallen off an old Depeche Mode album. It was synth-lite (far from industrial sounding anyway) and vocals are sultry and sexy with an ominous tone of danger. Confidence is most definitely present in the vocal delivery, which is always a plus, and the track is totally danceable.

The second track was a bit more interesting taking an approach that would have fit well on any New Order album but with a vocal style that harkens back to the female pop vocalists such as Madonna with very faint traces of Annie Lennox. Again highly danceable.

The alternate version of Believe didn’t sound that much different then the original to me (you can hear all of their stuff on their official page). Mind you I only listened a few times, it still sounded very similar to me. Still, it was good. A more current sounding track against the first two.

The Vogel remix for Familiar So Strange gave the song a very club feel to it, almost trance like. Vocals really became more hypnotic as well. The song just sounded as fleshed out as it could get, an improvement over the original which sounded small in comparison.

Overall, the album was fairly decent and makes me want to sit back and listen to the previous full album and wait for the next release. Fans of old school pop electronic will love this and it has a current enough flavor to welcome new listeners to join in. Well worth checking out.
