Murder, She Wrote ran for twelve long seasons marking it as a successful television program but that doesn’t go to say that it was a good one. In the Complete Ninth Season DVD release you get all 22 of the original episodes with no touch of flair to speak of. Audio is in a pitiful Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono and the picture, if they were going for nostalgic reproduction, is as decent as it ever was when it originally aired on television. If you’re a fan of the series no doubt you’ll want to add this to your collection, but if not I suggest taking it one disc at a time as a rental.
Angela Lansbury reprises her iconic role as Jessica Fletcher, a marvelous novelist who moonlights as a sleuth, intentional or not. The show attempts to offer up a mystery in every episode but time has not been kind to the show as mysteries have become more intelligent and complex leaving the mysteries in this show all too transparent. The episodes began to grow redundant after realizing that the first twenty minutes or so were all about setting up the suspects and by the time that’s over you pretty much know how it will end. Disappointing for newcomers but fans of the show will obviously have a reason to revisit the series.
