Rolan Bolan, son of late T-Rex front man Marc Boland, is set to release his debut album early in 2014. I had the opportunity to review the album, which features a cover of Children of the Revolution.

The five track album took me a bit by surprise. Bolan’s voice is soulful with a tinge of blues. Definitely defying the usual rock and roll feel with a singer/songwriter flare that makes the narrative of each song feel personal and even universally connective.

The album, musically, feels as if it were built around Bolan’s voice, his emotional drive and style, which is how it should be. Guitar work fluctuates between rock, blues, and even indie, drums subtle yet paired well to produce the perfect aesthetic for each songs mood.

I was a bit worried, seeing that Bolan covers a song from his late fathers band (Children of the Revolution), that he would try to hard to stick relatively close to his fathers style of music. Instead Bolan seems to be comparable to such acts as Eagle Eye Cherry or Amos Lee. Even his cover seems to take on a life of it’s own while still sticking close to the source material. It was a surprising album that I think will surprise listeners.
