MTV Unplugged has put another rock band in its belt with having the Scorpions playing live at the Lycabettus Theatre in Athens, Greece. This unplugged performance has the band playing their songs as an all-acoustic set while doing it in from of a audience at the center. Scorpions Unplugged in Athens features a 2 disc set with one disc being the audio tracks of the concert and disc 2 as a DVD showing the performance. It's the first open air MTV Unplugged set to be done while also being recently recorded as the concert was in September of 2013. This concert features songs from the Scorpions nearly 50 year long history of being a band, some of their more popular songs like "Rock You Like A Hurricane" and "Wind of Change' are played as well as other songs that have made them popular.
I wasn't too impressed with this unplugged version for this band. I'm not a Scorpions fan, I only know a few of their songs, "Rock You Like A Hurricane" being the one I know the most, but the songs just sound rough. It's not because it's unplugged and an all-acoustic concert, it's because the band sounds as if they are having a hard time playing the songs. Maybe it's because the band is nearly 50 years old and they don't have the gusto that they had when they were younger, maybe it's because this was a unplugged set where they can't get the full electric sound that goes along with their music, or it's what I think, both of these together making the songs sound rough and not that good. As I said, I only know a few songs but the ones I know should have energy and a quick pace to it, "Rock You Like A Hurricane" is supposed to actually rock me but none of these songs do. I like acoustic music, even with some metal bands it can give an old song a fresh sound, but Live in Athens was nothing fresh, it was more boring.
One thing I don't understand about this 2 disc set is why some songs where left off the CD. I get that the audio CD has 16 tracks on it but it's not all of the songs. The DVD features 25 songs, that's a lot of missing songs, even though I have it on the DVD there will be some people that just buy the CD, which means they won't get the DVD with all the tracks. Other than having the extra songs I didn't see much need in having the DVD. For me I would rather had the CD with all the songs on it than being forced to have to play the DVD when I want to hear any of the other songs. I might have enjoyed this set a little more if it had been played with more energy in the songs so that I didn't get bored with listening to them. Even watching them on the DVD wasn't that entertaining because I already knew ahead of time from listening to the CD that I wasn't really impressed with their performance.
