The City and Horses: Strange Range

The City and Horses is the indie rock/pop project of Marc Louis, who also has a career as a producer of children's TV shows. I only mention that fact because it's part of his bio on his site...and because it casts some of the lyrics on Strange Range in a particularly interesting/funny light: "The sweetest little thing that I've ever seen is you smoking weed at 17." Now to be fair, the rest of the song is pretty tongue-in-cheek...for that matter, so is the rest of the album. But it's still quite a turn of phrase, if you will.

What we've got here is a quirky album, full of "cute" music coupled with weird lyrics and vocals that run the gamut from catchy and bouncy to weird and somewhat experimental. While this genre isn't my main musical area of expertise, aspects of their (his?) sound reminds me of Flaming LIps or the Polyphonic Spree (minus the 15 thousand vocalists). It's goofy (in a good way) and poppy, with bizarre elements woven throughout. It's not exactly my cup of tea, but I have a feeling that Marc has tapped into a sound here that a lot of other people would enjoy. If any of this sounds intriguing to you, I'd suggest taking the time to check this out.
