The Pallisers 40th Anniversary Edition collection has its ups and downs. As per-usual Acorn releases, nothing has been done to upgrade the picture or audio quality from the previous incarnation of the series (which was released in in 2004 in a bulky box set). That aside, the show is pretty much the reason why these types of dramatizations exist in British television even today (I‘m looking at you Downton Abby). Outstanding costumes, beautiful locations, magnificent acting, and just about everything in-between to immerse you in the time period so that, even though you’re on your couch decades later, you’re still in the time and place and really hating or loving the characters from the show with a disturbing real world level.

The 40th Anniversary Edition of The Pallisers brings SDH subtitles to the collection for the first time, offering the hard of hearing the opportunity to read the scathing remarks, loving passes, and political hullabaloo, which unfortunately detracts a bit of the emotional delivery from the actors, but is a step up all the same.

The set is a nice 8 discs all under one roof instead of the previous 12 disc collection, each disc coming in its own DVD case and housed in an elongated cardboard display. You still get the same series in its entirety, but it’s really no larger then two DVD cases, if that.

Bonus features include an interview with Susan Hampshire (Monarch of the Glenn), 32 page viewers guide, and Anthony Trollope (author of The Pallisers novels) materials.

If you’re looking for a space saver this release will save you on room if you already own the previous release of the series. If you love British drama you might want to check this series out.
