The fun front cover of the book gives a promising outlook, and the exciting anticipation is further strengthened by credible and renowned rock journalist and writer Phil Sutcliffe, and quotes by highly acclaimed rock stars in the inside covers. This certainly raises the expectations about this book.

There are many noteworthy facts, both well-known and less-known, throughout the book, and they are supported by accurately referenced quotes as well as photos from various places and dates. Another very interesting feature is that each album has its own chapter. These chapters come with description, history, honest review and impact of the respective albums. Then, of course, there are also background accounts about the band members. For instance, there is one section that is dedicated to the Young brothers’ gear. The author talks not only about Malcolm and Angus’ guitars but also about their choices of amps, cables, strings, picks, and specific modifications to the guitars.

This book is full of information and packed with archival and rare photos, and the writing style is immersive. While nowadays much of the information can be pulled off the internet, the author's writing style about the history of the very early days of the band provides a fresh approach, and he also adds a few new insights. If you have ever been curious about how the band all started and came together, who was hired and fired, and what many of the band members had done before their engagements in the band, you will find answers in this book. You will also get to see their off-stage photos, and scanned memorabilia such as backstage passes, posters and comic strips.

This may not be the absolutely complete AC/DC encyclopedia either, but if I had to call one book THE Ultimate “Illustrated” History, so far this one may be it. I would bet that even the most die-hard AC/DC fanatic can find one tidbit that he/she had not previously known. For example, the story about Chris Slade’s reaction to his dismissal from the band and the information about several other players who were part of the band before the first official AC/DC lineup, were new to me. If you are an AC/DC aficionado, this informative and insightful book is definitely worth your money and time. It will be a great addition to your AC/DC collection or make a fantastic gift to a big AC/DC fan this holiday season. I cannot recommend highly enough.
