It’s become somewhat of a niche, me writing up reviews for children’s music. I’ve heard some truly awful stuff and I’ve been blown away by some absolutely amazing stuff. I don’t ever recall finding myself somewhere in the middle with an album, that is until now.

Alison Faith Levy’s World Of Wonder is a kids album in every sense of the word. Unlike some of the great kids albums I’ve reviewed there isn’t a magnificent musical presence here. It sounds like a very passionate project from an individual that wanted to make a kids album, not one that needed to. There wasn’t a strip of evidence that the album had it’s exterior walls carefully built up to offer a sense of deep substance to the album, but there is a sense that Levy just might want to give kids something clean and age appropriate to listen to. I respect that.

As I first began listening to the album I quickly made a mental note that Levy is not the strongest of singers. She’s good, but the acapella opening of Reach For The Sky is a bold stripped down presentation of Levy’s voice. I want to say that she hangs on to a note maybe a bit too long but lacks the strength to keep the note just so. It’s a minor quirk but it does pop up now and again, and of course when the album kicks into full swing it’s not as noticeable.

The songs on the album range from okay to pretty great. Her seemingly over dramatized version of Itsy Bitsy Spider seemed a bit overkill but Anteater had all the silly fun kids albums should have. One of my favorite songs off of the album would be One More Cupcake because it defines kids and opens up a world they may very well be comfortable with and connect with. Other then that the songs on the album are give or take, as far as the way I perceive children grasping the entertainment value out of them, but that’s one man’s opinion. I do offer this album for suggestion but as always final judgment is yours. Enjoy.
