Artist: Lucy Schwartz Album: Life in Letters Members: Lucy Schwartz Label: Nettwerk Music Group Tracks: 11 Type: LP Release Date: August 9, 2010 Discs: 1 Rating: ( )Grade: A "Life in Letters" by Lucy Schwartz is one of the most promising CDs I've heard in a while. It is SO nice to hear actual musicianship. I must admit that this CD review came on the heels of some other very unfortunate "artists" who couldn't carry a tune with a handle if they tried, so I couldn't help but be surprised. And pleasantly at that, because I listened to this CD (on purpose) for over a week straight! Lucy Shwartz and all of her 20 years possesses a musical quality that I haven't heard in a long time. A good one. She has a rich alto voice reminiscent of Sarah McLaughlin and Carly Simon blended together. As a pianist and songwriter, her music doesn't come across as pompous or self-important. You can feel the emotion and soul in her voice with every word. She means it, and it isn't in your face. "Letters" is Lucy's first full-length CD after several EPs and downloadable singles. In all of the 11 tracks of the album, I found myself listening to "Morning" (the last one) several times over. It's just very sweet and quiet, and something you just like to listen to. Lucy is already a verteran of the film soundtrack with songs like "Gone Away" for "Adam," "Post Grad," and the "Darling I Do" duet with Landon Pigg for "Shrek Ever After." She has equally jazzy and jaunty numbers very much like Nellie McKay just show her musical range. Currently on the Lilith Fair tour, Lucy is one to catch whether it's online or on tour. What a bright little star in a dark musical sky. Great musician, great album, don't miss out. |
