Oh No Not Stereo is a alternative, rock, pop style band whose new album is title ‘In Case of Stares Use Fire’. On this album are 10 songs that are some of a upbeat, energetic tempo that has the lead vocals being sung by Skyler Nielsen. What has stood out on this album to me is the difference between nearly all the songs on here. I’ve talked about it before on how having the same sound through-out the whole album can hurt even a well played set of songs while having a mixture of sounds can help a semi-ok set of songs sound better. Here with Oh No Not Stereo, they have taken 10 songs and made them sound different by using the sounds of the past 40 years in music.

On the first song Behind Closed Doors, I was hearing the sound of the 90’s, the good 90’s, when alternative was actually something that meant an alternate sound to what you normally hear. The song has a good rhythm to it, the flow makes the song move along quickly but not so much you miss out on anything, and the vocals sound good, even with that layered sound that it has. Then I was thrown off completely with the second song Big Hero From A Small Town because I was not prepared for that opening that sounded like it was from some 70’s group left over from the peace and love years. Though the rest of the song does have a similar sound with the vocals as the first song had, the beat and tempo of this second song is much quicker, it’s more energetic, and even has a point when it slows down to be a mellow few seconds. It’s a fun song with some well places sounds and beats in it.

Then I was fooled yet again, with the third song being a mellow song that has meaning, a song that is supposed to be deep, in the song Brighterside. Though this is one of the less liked songs on the album for me it’s a good example for Skyler Nielsens voice and how he has good vocals for these songs. What makes this album good is the mixture in the songs but what makes this mixture work is that the vocals are good and the instruments even better. There’s a lot of energy being put into these songs, fun energy that flows out of them and into the listener, me, and it made me like them that had me replay the album as soon as it was finished. Though I won’t say this group is something of a breakout band that will be standing the test of time for bands, but I will say that out of the most recent bands that I’ve heard lately this group had a more fun sound to their songs with a well balanced tempo.
