Artist: Spencer Breslin Album: Labor Day Label: Acadian Recording Co. Tracks: 11 Type: Digital Release Date: August 14, 2012 Rating: ( )Grade: A+ I can’t believe that 12 years ago I was irked by the sub par acting of Spencer Breslin in the Bruce Willis kid comedy, er, The Kid. Over the years I watched Breslin grow up but never in a million years did I expect to find myself one day reviewing an album from Breslin, nor the fact that I would enjoy it so much. So how does it sound? Breslin’s style is very folkish hitting upon the folkish rock narration of Bob Dylan (Bobby Of Saratoga, A German In New York) to the perfect quirky basement imperfection of Daniel Johnston (The Rapture) to the oddly dark sounding spoken word poetry of Henry Rollins (The Patient). At its core though Labor Day is a fantastic singer/songwriter folk effort from Breslin whose delivery, music, and lyrics all add up to the fact that you never truly know a person, even when that person is in your home, in the theaters, and on television for a good decade of your existence. A real good title for the album would have been Expect The Unexpected, because in the end it’s all pretty much unexpected. Indie, folk, singer/songwriter fans absolutely have to check this album out and let me know if they love it as much as I do. Great stuff. |
