The main question to answer is if this is worth renting and/or purchasing, considering the program was shown for free on Comedy Central.  I’ll save you the time of reading the rest of the review and say – NO.

Still with me?  Cool, here’s why.  Although Broken Lizard started off as live performers, they’re mostly known for juvenile movies.  And I say that having really enjoyed Super Troopers and mostly enjoying Club Dread and not seeing anything else they’ve done.  Their strengths are with films and film characters and that’s not necessarily a bad thing.  The Kids in the Hall were genius at TV sketch comedy, but even I’ll admit that Brain Candy was pretty spotty.  So after watching Broken Lizard: Stands Up, I’m surprised anyone coughed up the dough to let them film a movie in the first place.

The show is broken up into stand up routines from each of the five members.  And each routine is essentially a very long dick joke of some form, making fun of the other four guys not on stage, along with some occasional pot humor thrown in.  Whether you find any of the funny will likely depend on how baked or tanked you are.  In between, there are a couple of sketches which really aren’t that amusing either.  The best bit is that last one, where all the guys are onstage and talking about how they met and became friends.  If the entire DVD was more along this line, it might’ve been worth watching.  Otherwise, it’s just fairly lame jokes delivered by guys who seem pretty uncomfortable being onstage again.

And yes, this DVD features “extended and uncensored” material, which basically boils down to unbleeped language.  If that means that much to you, then by all means spend the 15 bucks or so this will cost you.  But what about the extras you ask?  Well the live Super Troopers sketch was a rehash of a scene from the film using audience members (meh).  I tried to get through the On the Road with Broken Lizard, but got bored by it fairly quickly and I didn’t bother clicking on the outtakes.  So if you’re a diehard Broken Lizard aficionado, please do not let me deter you.  Go pick yourself up a copy now.  But for most folks out there, just add the show to your DVR, watch it when there’s nothing else on and then delete it.  I just wish there was a way to do that with memory.  If only I partook of the substances they so often joke about…
