Interesting Tidbits

Olivia Wilde admitted that playing the role "Brooke" has been her all-time favorite role in her career.

“Butter” is a movie about the cutthroat competition of butter sculpting in Iowa. Bob (Ty Burrell), a 15-time state butter sculpting champion, is forced into retirement and the race to be the new butter sculpting king is in the hands of several candidates. His wife, Laura (Jennifer Garner), can’t admit or face the fact that Bob is retiring, because she loves all the attention, and does anything and everything to keep the crown in the family. However, Bob’s stripper mistress, Brooke (Olivia Wilde), feels that Bob owes her something and wants to make his life a living hell by joining in on the competition. Lastly, Destiny (Yara Shahidi) is an orphan with lots of artistic talent and just wants to find something she is good at and does so by being the wildcard in the competition. Who wins? You are going to have to watch the movie to find out.

After reading the synopsis for this movie, I thought this was an odd concept for a movie and I was not sure what to expect. Surprisingly, this movie was funnier and a lot more interesting than I had originally thought. The jokes and the dialogue was a better than I had expected and the plot was unpredictable and over-the-top for a movie about butter sculpting. The movie’s pacing was just right and I really enjoyed watching this movie.

In addition, most of the acting was really well done and the movie had quite the all-star cast (Hugh Jackman, Olivia Wilde, Ty Burrell) to make this a memorable movie. Despite all the big names, the breakout stars were Brooke (Olivia Wilde) and Destiny (Yara Shahidi). I do not think I have ever seen this side of Olivia Wilde before, but as Brooke, she was very seductive and really funny with her one-liners. Also, Destiny had her moments to shine in the movie and she had the poise most veteran actors only dream of. They both made the movie what it is and did an awesome job.

The only issues I could find with “Butter” were Jennifer Garner and the bonus footage. Jennifer Garner tried too hard to be funny as Laura and just came off as obnoxious and very annoying. Her acting did not feel natural and seemed to be forced most of the time. Also, even though they did include a gag reel and some deleted scenes, I liked the movie so much I wanted to learn even more about it and see more. Regardless of the minor flaws, I really liked watching “Butter” and I highly recommend it if you are looking for a good laugh. For those reasons, I am giving “Butter” an “A-.”
