Title: Gypsy Genre: Classics, Comedy, Drama, Musical Starring: Natalie Wood, Karl Malden, Rosalind Russell, Morgan Brittany Director: Mervyn LeRoy Studio: Warner Bros. Runtime: 143 minutes Release Date: November 20, 2012 Format: BLU-RAY Discs: 1 Rating: ( )Grade: D+ “Gypsy” was first released in 1962, but it has been digitally remastered and re-released on Blu-ray. The movie is about Rose (Rosalind Russell) living her dreams of stardom through her two daughters, June (Morgan Brittany) and Louise (Natalie Wood). June is always in the spotlight while Louise is always in the background. Rose meets Herbie (Karl Malden) and catapults the family to more notoriety. However, the girls want to grow up, to their mother’s dismay and controlling ways, and take different paths in life. For a movie that was filmed in 1962, I was amazed at the wonderful digital remastering job that was done for this movie. The colors were so vibrant and the picture was surprisingly sharp for such an old movie. The sound was also very crisp and clear. However, I did not like what I heard most of the time in the movie. Besides these two items, that was as far as what I actually liked about the movie. If you enjoyed the movie when it was first released, this is a total upgrade for you and a highly recommend buy. However, if this is your first watching the movie, do not expect too much out of it. The dialogue was horrible and the acting by the actresses was unnatural and mediocre. Also, the singing was really bad and the musical numbers made me cringe. Rose and June were horrible vocalist and I am trying my hardest to block those scenes out of my mind. Lastly, the story was too slow and drawn out. Rose my least favorite character and reminded me of the 1920’s version of Honey Boo-Boo’s mom because of her attitude and over-exploitation of her children. As I mentioned earlier, if you liked this movie before, you will enjoy it again. However, I doubt this movie will gain any new fans. It was outdated and very annoying on several fronts. For those reasons, I am giving “Gypsy” a “D+.” |
