Factoid:

Zoe Kazan's character Mary-Catherine is upset because her boyfriend Charlie wants to uproot them from New York to Los Angeles. In real life Kazan was born and raised in Los Angeles and later moved to New York.

HAPPYTHANKYOUMOREPLEASE is the birth child of Josh Radnor (How I Met Your Mother) who wrote, starred in, and directed the film. The film is a love story of sorts. You have Sam Wexler (Radnor) who finds a boy on the subway who gets separated from his family and who refuses to go back. After some searching Sam finds the boys living conditions are poorly and decides to let the boy stay with him. There is Mary-Catherine (Zoe Kazan; It’s Complicated, Me and Orson Welles) and Charlie (Pablo Schreiber; Lords of Dogtown, Vicky Christie Barcelona). Charlie has found a business opportunity in Los Angeles which would take he and Mary-Catherine from their home in New York. Finally there’s Annie (Malin Akerman; Watchmen, The Proposal) who has the issue of dating the wrong men. It’s a subtle love story between all the characters involved including Mississippi (Kate Mara; 127 Hours, Iron Man 2) and Sam #2 (Tony Hale; Arrested Development, Stranger Then Fiction), love interests for Sam and Annie, as well as a love letter to New York.

QUALITY:
HAPPYTHANKYOUMOREPLEASE is an unreliable little film as far as picture quality goes. Filmed on a shoestring budget of $35,063 the film tends to look like it. Interior lighting gives a terrible haloing effect on the films characters distorting their skin color to a reddish hue just making the picture look a bit warped. Exterior scenes are much better but black levels are weak at best offering up a white hue in some scenes and grain is a factor. Fortunately, and purposefully or not, a lot of the scenes are shot close knit which means, in the HD world, that there is a smaller scale for error. Skin becomes organic and well detailed, line definition is sharp, color is amazing (be sure to keep your eyes on Malin Ackerman’s eyes as they truly shine in HD), and grain and off color discrepancies become a non-issue. Unfortunately the picture quality of HAPPYTHANKYOUMOREPLEASE just doesn’t hit the mark as far as HD goes. Audio is presented in Dolby TrueHD 5.1 and gets the job done for a film that is basically all dialogue and the films music soundtrack is given ample individual attention so that each song works as its supposed to in creating an emotional platform for the films story to play out.

BONUS FEATURES:
~Audio Commentary with Producer/Writer/Director/Actor Josh Radnor and Producer Jesse Hara.
~HAPPYTHANKYOUMOREMUSICPLEASE- Featuring Jaymay. This is a 6+ minute feature starring Jaymay, the indie singer/songwriter who performs the songs for the film. I understand it’s a commerce where one hand washes the other so its kind of cool to get a short little expose on Jaymay whose music really is a beautiful addition to the film.
~Deleted Scenes. There has never been more importance on Deleted Scenes then there is here. While the film’s subtle approach to fleshing out its characters and offering their story really falls a bit flat here you get scenes, which honestly I wish had remained in the film because their just fantastic, that open up the characters and their stories. If it weren’t such a no no I would suggest watching the deleted scenes before the actual film to give you the broader perspective on the characters and their situations.
