Title: Housewife Starring: Bette Davis, George Brent, Ann Dvorak Director: Alfred E. Green Studio: Warner Archive Runtime: 69 minutes Release Date: November 10, 2011 Format: DVD Rating: ( )Grade: D- “Housewife” was first released in 1934. However, it has just been re-released in DVD this past year. “Housewife” is about William (George Brent), an office manager for an advertising agency, and his wife Nan (Ann Dvorak), who is a homemaker. After being passed up for promotions and being unhappy with his job, William decides to start his own advertising agency with the suggestion and support from Nan. However, William’s ex-girlfriend, Patricia (Bette Davis), causes a rift between the couple and their worlds spiral out of control. I found a lot of problems with “Housewife” that made it almost impossible to watch. Even though it was converted to DVD, the picture quality and sound was fairly bad. The plot was boring and the pacing of the movie was very slow. Even though the acting was okay, the characters were unlikable and I could care less with who ended up with whom. Lastly, the ending was anticlimactic and made no sense at all. Besides lacking any extras, this movie was not worth watching. The only character I did like in the movie was William and Nan’s son, Buddy. He brought some comic relief to this tame movie, but even came off as annoying at times. Other than that, I do not recommend watching this movie unless you are a part of the older generation. For those reasons, I am giving this movie a “D-.” |
