Title: The Awkward Comedy Show Genre: Comedy Starring: Baron Vaughn, Eric Andre, Hannibal Buress, Victor Varnado, Marina Franklin Director: Victor Varnado Studio: NEW VIDEO GROUP Runtime: 80 minutes Release Date: May 12, 2010 Format: DVD MPAA Rating: Rating: ( )Grade: B+ The tagline for this DVD is "Comedy, Plus Blackness, to the Nerd Power." The film showcases four up and coming black stand-up comedians interviewed by comic Marina Franklin. Through stand-up acts, interviews, and just random hangout sessions, we get to see the individual styles of each. Baron Vaughn, Eric Andre, Hannibal Buress, and Victor Varnado each share the spotlight in this laugh out loud comedy routine. The title can be a little misleading as it isn't really awkward at all. It plays out like your typical comedy show and even though the comedians are portrayed as "weird," they don't seem much different from anyone else. The good news is it's funny, and that's what matters most. By far the two standouts are Baron and Eric. They have the funniest routines and I found them to be the most engaging. Coming up next was Victor, who is actually a black albino and focused on that for the majority of his routine. Bringing up the rear was Hannibal. He just wasn't as funny as the others and often times was too soft spoken. If anyone made the show awkward, it was this guy. The Awkward Comedy Show is actually quite funny, the Baconator skit being particularly hilarious. There are some lulls between jokes and the cutting to the hangout sessions was a bit annoying but overall, it's nice to see some new and fresh faces out there. All these comedians I had never heard of before and I'll definitely be looking out for them in the future. |
