Title: The Phantom of the Opera Genre: Musical Starring: Gerard Butler, Emmy Rossum, Patrick Wilson, Miranda Richardson, Minnie Driver Director: Joel Schumacher Studio: Warner Home Video Runtime: 1432 Minutes Release Date: May 3, 2005 Format: DVD Discs: 2 MPAA Rating: Rating: ( )Grade: A- The Phantom of the Opera has long been one of my favorite Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals. The story of a misunderstood and disfigured man wanting nothing more than to understand and get through to this love. Joel Schumacher's beautiful portrayal of Webber's classic musical more than makes up for his destruction of the Batman franchise. This is where Schumacher shines and this is where he needs to stay. The story has almost a Beauty and the Beast feel to it but is much more in depth and grown-up. The special features are not short on the 2-disc set and the price difference between the single and double disc is so miniscule that it is almost pointless to get the single disc version. Overall, between Schumacher's stunning directing and the well-performed musical numbers (including a new song written by Webber for this movie version) is a beautifully sad story that is a must see for any Broadway fan. |
