The Running Man is based on the novel by Richard Bachman. Richard Bachman is a pen name used by Stephen King.
Its hard to believe that this is the material that boosted Arnold Schwarzenegger into stardom. The Running Man is chalk full of horrible dialogue, unexplainable explosions, and upfront nonsense. Who works out in their lingerie with stockings on? Come on man.
QUALITY:
I’m undecided on what makes this an impossible transfer for Blu-Ray. Is it just that the film is to old or that the film style itself with all its ugly neon lights and off colored spandex just doesn’t offer up anything to get excited about in HD. Its grainy, a bit dark, and in some spots the color is off. Sound is remastered in DTS-HD Master Audio and in a sense your getting that Blu-Ray sound; its bigger, better, and often times theatrical sounding or more so but the quality of the audio before wasn’t anything that spectacular so your basically taking a mediocre sound and boosting it. Audiophiles will probably hold their nose up to this release but the average Joe will get some satisfaction out of it.
BONUS FEATURES:
*Audio Commentary by Director Paul Michael Glaser and Producer Tim Zinnemann.
*Audio Commentary by Executive Producer Rob Cohen
*Game Theory Featurette which talks about the evolution of Reality Television and has appearances from contestants as well as behind the scenes movers and shakers of The Real World, Survivor, and Fear Factor.
*Lockdown On Main Street Featurette. If the film did not have a conspiracy thread running straight down its middle this feature would read like propaganda. Legal types talk about the government obtaining absolute power after 9/11 by imposing the Patriot Act and what it means to our society and way of life as pertain to the film. Interesting stuff but seems like it serves another agenda.
