BOTTOM LINE

Please Give is like a page out of Woody Allen's book. It's definitely not for everyone but there are some parts you'll enjoy.

Kate and Alex own their own furniture store where they purchase most of their inventory from estate sales and then turn around and sell it for typically a much higher profit. Their business has done pretty well for itself, so well in fact that they have purchased the apartment adjacent to theirs for more living space. The only problem is that the elderly and blunt Andra still lives there as they wait for Death to come knocking on her door.

Please Give stars Catherine Keener, who has starred in director Nicole Holofcener's three previous films. In this film, she's constantly questioning the moral implications of everything she does. Should she charge so much for furniture she paid so little for? Is it wrong for her to want some old lady to die so she can move in? To combat her guilty conscience, she is very generous when it comes to the homeless, giving upwards of $20 to a random person living on the street or offering her leftovers from a night out on the town. Even though he's in the same boat as Kate, Alex (Oliver Platt) doesn't have the same moral dilemma. He has no problem with what he's doing and attempts to comfort Kate in that everything's fine.

Where the film really shines is with Ann Guilbert who plays the elderly Andra. She tells everyone exactly what is on her mind and doesn't sugarcoat it or anything. If you're pissing her off or don't look good, she's the first to let you know directly to your face. Her two granddaughters, Rebecca (Rebecca Hall) and Mary (Amanda Peet), help out when needed. While Rebecca is usually the one who this responsibility falls under, Mary is more like Alex in that she doesn't really care about the good or the bad.

If the plot of Please Give sounds pretty boring, that's because it is. The film is like something from the mind of Woody Allen in that there is nothing fanciful about it. It's a movie that tells it like it is, just like Andra. There is some humor scattered about but that's pretty much it. There isn't much to hold up this "normal" story. Maybe I don't have a guilty conscience like the people in the film do so there isn't much thinking involved for me. Whatever the case may be, it's definitely not for everyone.

Overall, Please Give is very similar to Holofcener's other films so use them as a basis. If you've never seen her work before, rent one to see if you like it. As mentioned before, they're akin to something from Woody Allen. Just don't go in expecting to sit back, relax, and watch the next summer blockbuster. There's a little bit more thinking involved.
