Title: Whip It Starring: Ellen Page, Marcia Gay Harden, Daniel Stern, Drew Barrymore Director: Drew Barrymore Studio: Fox Searchlight Runtime: 111 minutes In Theatres: October 2, 2009 MPAA Rating: Rating: ( )Grade: B Bliss Cavender (played by Ellen Page) is a pageant model that is not happy with being one. Her mother Brook Cavender (played by Marcia Gay Harden) only wants her daughter to have a life that will allow her to make something of herself in the world. Only, the problem with Bliss's mother’s plans is that they would only work for the 1950's woman and not for one of today’s generation. While Bliss's father Earl Cavender (played by Daniel Stern) has no real idea of what is going on with his family. While Bliss is being forced to live a life she don't want to her friend wants her to live the one that will be her own life. While out one night Bliss gets to see a roller derby event that changes her life from that point forward. Going into Whip It, I was already liking it. This would mainly be because I have yet to see a Fox Searchlight film that I didn't like and Whip It is no exception. Though Ellen Page plays yet another role where she has a home life of being forced into a life she wants while keeping secret the life she does want she finds that she can respect the ideas being forced on her. Nothing new really and I can't say it's even a new twist to the story but I can say that it's a well-developed and well-acted portrayal of the story. Though I really enjoyed this film there are still a few moments that I thought that film was dragging on. Not only that I but I really didn't get the character of Birdman (played by Carlo Alban) in the film. His character served no real purpose to the film and didn't push any of the characters along in the film. It seemed that the side character for Bliss Cavender where put in there just to show that she had some friends but by the end of the film they just threw in an ending for them so they would have a closure of their own. Still, I really enjoyed Whip It. I was introduced to the world of roller derby while getting a well-acted and entertaining film. |

Whip It
The movie seemed to drag... It seemed to get better but after the first 90 mins. I expected more from Ms. Barrymore since she not only directed the movie she also stared in the movie... I would probably buy the movie but if I didn't see it through the screening, I wouldn't have gone to see it.
Liked It
A very likeable movie. Thought it dragged in a few places, but enjoyable.

makes me want to roller skate and punch someone. the movie was excellent the love story was a bit cheesy in parts, but this coming of age tale was very enjoyable.
