Did You Know?

Katy Perry and Megan Fox have revealed in interviews that they are fans of the show.

From an early age, I've always been interested in subjects of the occult.  I loved The Real Ghostbusters cartoon - particularly the mythology of characters like Samhain and The Sandman.  New episodes of Unsolved Mysteries were highly anticipated in my household.  I must have checked out every book about ghosts in the school library at one time or another.  Back then, television specials about aliens or Bigfoot were rare.  Fast forward to the present, where the multitude of cable television channels has created a demand for more content.  Entire series have been created around the search for Bigfoot and ghosts.  Personally, I hate the majority of paranormal programming on television today.  The ghost-hunting shows particularly drive me insane because they usually only consist of people running around in supposedly haunted buildings shouting, "Did you see that?"  Being somewhat of a skeptic, I enjoy hearing from actual experts in scientific fields talk about paranormal subjects and maybe even present some evidence once in a while.

Currently airing on H2 (History 2), Ancient Aliens proposes hypotheses of past human-extraterrestrial contact which may have influenced the history and development of mankind.  Viewers can expect to hear from a wide range of contributors to the program including doctors, authors, and paranormal experts.  Most of the contributors are articulate and talk about hard facts or possible evidence instead of just making wild assumptions.  Giorgio Tsoukalos, on the other hand, comes across as a shyster who could make predictions from his bowl of alphabet soup without blinking an eye.

Season four opens with two episodes focused on the Mayan civilization and doomsday scenarios tied to their calendar which ends on December 21, 2012.  Although no mind blowing evidence was brought to light, it was very interesting to learn how advanced the Mayans were in terms of mathematics and astronomy while Europe suffered through the Dark Ages.  Another episode talks about the possible alien connection with mega-disasters on our planet.  I found this subject to be distasteful especially when mentioning fairly recent events like the tsunamis in Japan or the earthquakes that ravaged Haiti.  The season also has episodes talking about possible alien connections with Bigfoot, Da Vinci, and the extinction of dinosaurs.

My favorite episode revolves around a subject I was completely unfamiliar with – the ruins of Puma Punku.  Located in Bolivia, the ruins have ignited controversy among the scientific community due to the difficulty of accurately determining its age.  Further complicating matters are designs carved into the ruins at perfect 90 degree angles and carvings reminiscent of using high-powered drills today.  The Tiwanaku tribe thought to have built Puma Punku only had access to Stone Age tools incapable of carving delicate channels or boring narrow holes.  Fascinated viewers will be unsettled to learn that this civilization disappeared without explanation.

Audio and visual on this Blu-Ray set is crisp and crystal clear.  You will likely be underwhelmed when the realization hits that there are zero special features.  I doubt an extended episode or a few unedited sit-down interviews with contributors would have been that difficult to include.  Be that as it may, fans of the paranormal will eat this up with a spoon.  Just be sure to pick it up before December 21.
