Show: Defying Gravity Season/Volume: The Complete First Season Genre: Action/Adventure, Drama, Sci-Fi/Fantasy Starring: Ron Livingston, Laura Harris, Paula Garcés, Malik Yoba, Andrew Airlie Studio: 20th Century Fox Runtime: 578 minutes Release Date: January 19, 2010 Format: DVD Discs: 4 Rating: ( )Grade: B- Bonus Features Mission Accomplished A Look At Defying Gravity, Photo Slide Show, Deleted Scenes Maddux Donner is a veteran astronaut working on training a whole new crew to take on one of the biggest space explorations ever, a six year tour of the solar system. Upon taking off the crew begins to experience odd things as each is haunted by the guilt of their pasts; but try to keep it to themselves. As the mission continues though it becomes too much for them to ignore and they seek out an explanation. Nothing can prepare them for what they find out is really their mission. “Defying Gravity” is an interesting show that sucked me right in. It has some similarities to “Lost” as it jumps from past, present, and future of all the characters slowly revealing things and creating a ton of questions with no immediate answers. Some of the events that happen are odd, not smoke monster odd, but not easily explained odd. Then there is also a touch of “Grey’s Anatomy” as there is a narration by the main character at the beginning and end of episodes explaining his inner thoughts and revelations on life. Plus there is a ton of sexual tension, love affairs, and potential love if the characters could just get over their pride and confess they want to be together. And let us not overlook that the two main characters Maddux and Zoe’s first hook up was a drunken one similar to that of Meredith and McDreamy. The story, the writing, the acting all works. I was sucked in to the mystery of it all, trying to wait patiently for the answers. Great thing is you get some answers before the end of the season (more than “Lost” gives you in the first season) and while there is still a lot going on by the end of the last episode there is some closure and there is no big cliffhanger, you know someone trapped in a cave-in type of thing where several people could be dead. It’s the effects that leave something to be desired. At times they almost seem more like they are a place holder until they can come up with something better to put in its place. Luckily they don’t really start using special effects too heavily until the end of the season so you are not subjected to it too much. While I liked this show I can see why it was cancelled. “Lost” demands a lot of viewers to be patient and hang in there with little explanation, this caused their ratings to drop over time, which is similar to what “Defying Gravity” asks. But then it also has the drama of a “Grey’s Anatomy’ and a healthy dose of sci-fi with the space travel. All these things mixed together work for me; but I can see how it will limit down the audience tremendously. This show being cancelled leaves me in a tough spot. It is a good show, if you like sci-fi/drama/mystery/space stuff. But seeing as there are ton of questions and very few answers given in the course of the first season it is hard for me to recommend this show to those that did not watch it when it aired. You will probably end up like me frustrated and wanting answers. |
