Freaknik: The Musical originally aired on Cartoon Networks late-night programming, Adult Swim.
Once upon a time there was...A House Party.
In the 1990's, Atlanta had one of the largest celebrations and parties of all time. This party was dubbed Freaknik. Of course, in this animated musical, that's not exactly how things are remembered. According to Freaknik: The Musical, when Freaknik was shut down, the ghost of Freaknik (T-Pain) went into hiding. Until now. It's 2010 and the ghost of Freaknik is summoned back to life. He's throwing the biggest block party the world has ever seen and won't let anyone stop him. This includes Bill Cosby, Al Sharpton and, of course, Oprah Winfrey.
But that's not where our story stops: When Freaknik announces a Battle of the Trillest, four boys from a bad neighborhood are inspired to take their sad lives to the grave and adopt the luxurious lifestyle of Rap artists. These boys are the dream-fueled Virgil (Young Cash), Big Uzi (Rick Ross), Lite Skinn'd (Cee-Lo Green) and Doela Man (DJ Pooh). Together, they are The Sweet Tea Mobsters. However, getting to Atlanta isn't as easy as they expect. Through frat parties and gangsters, they must prove they are truly the "trillest" rap-stars in the world. Can Freaknik fight off the haters? Can The Sweet Tea Mobsters out-rap the Fruit Bowl Boys?
Freaknik: The Musical isn't something you take seriously. At all. I mean, go read the plot again! Freaknik spends the entire story singing to different groups of people to persuade them to party at Freaknik in Atlanta. And these songs sound nothing different than songs from the newest T-Pain album. Every song is catchy, auto-tuned and kind of hilarious. One song is aimed at "women-ladies" and focuses on how they can abandon their kids, go get their "nails did" and live the good life with Freaknik. The songs aren't the only source of humor in this musical. All of the characters keep laughs coming while creating an enjoyable road trip story. Freaknik: The Musical achieves something rarely done: It achieves in being a hilarious satire while staying true to the roots of rap/hip-hop/R&B/funk. No wonder they didn't have any trouble hiring all of their incredible voice-talents, including: Snoop Dogg, George Clinton, Lil' Wayne, Lil' Jon, Big Boi and Kel Mitchell.
The features on this DVD are pretty slim, really. In fact, the only real feature on this DVD is a Directors' Cut with Commentary from T-Pain, Young Fyre and One Chance. Otherwise, you can take your pick of your favorite song from the movie and disregard that silly plot and get down to the dance numbers in the Music Videos section. Like I said, pretty slim.
Regardless of the limited special features, Freaknik: The Musical is a hysterical journey into the musical world of how Freaknik was born, killed, brought back, eventually killed again and finally brought back to life for good.
