Show: Soul Eater Season/Volume: Part One Genre: Anime Starring: Laura Bailey, Micah Solusod, Brittney Karbowski Studio: Funimation Runtime: 315 minutes Release Date: February 9, 2010 Format: DVD Discs: 2 Rating: ( )Grade: A- Bonus Features Commentary Episode. 7, Soul Eater Late Show, Textless Opening & Closing Songs, Trailers Maka and Soul attend the Death Weapon Meister Academy where they study and train; but this is no normal school. Maka is a meister and Soul can transform at will into her weapon. Together they defeat the evils of the world and once they have absorbed ninety-nine evil human souls and one witch soul then Soul will become a Death Scythe. But it is even harder than they could imagine as just one mistake can set them back to zero and make them need to collect all the souls all over again. For an anime dealing with eating souls and fighting evil humans it is rather light hearted and even a bit cutesy. The animation is bright, colorful, and for some reason at times reminded me of some characters from Mario games. The characters all have quirks like Death Kid and his need for everything to be symmetrical he even carries 2 weapons and Black Star whose ego is often his downfall. Honestly I really found the characters and story to be a lot of fun. It has some interesting elements as far as humans changing into a variety of weapons, the eating of souls, and the villains they must fight. But they still manage to keep it cheery and have fun with it. Not one to be taken too seriously but there is also an ongoing story with the villain Medusa that could possibly just suck you right in. |
