Show: Spongebob Squarepants Genre: Kids Studio: Nickelodeon Runtime: 88 mins Release Date: June 14, 2011 Format: DVD Discs: 1 Rating: ( )Grade: B This collection of eight SpongeBob SquarePants episodes centers around the adventures of Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy. While I’m not a huge SBSP fan, whenever I encounter this animated universe, I do enjoy the various layers of humor that the creators manage to work in. While on the surface, this series obviously succeeds as a children’s cartoon show, it also features some pretty sharp and witty material that appeals to adults as well. Case in point? These superhero episodes, where you’ll find spoofs of the DC comic cartoons of the 70s and 80s, as well as some tributes to the original Batman TV series. It’s well done for a kid’s show and for that, I applaud them. It’s not something that I’ll probably be revisiting on my own, but if you’ve got a child who’s in the SBSP target age-range, you could do a lot worse than to get stuck watching a few of these episodes. As a standalone DVD release, this isn’t too bad either. I’m not a huge fan of single disc releases, especially for TV shows with multiple seasons, but this collection at least makes sense thematically. It also comes with a couple of bonus SBSP clips and a full-length episode from fellow Nicktoon show, T.U.F.F. Puppy. There you have it. Funny stuff, if you and/or someone in your family is a fan.
