Aaron Mcgruder, creator and executive producer, continues to deliver sharp, smartly-written, American satire focused on the Freeman family in the Maryland suburb of Woodcrest. The Freeman family is:

  • Robert - granddad, mostly clueless, but means well
  • Huey - older of the two boys. Huey seems much older than his ten years and is definitely the wisest and most level-headed member of the family.
  • Riley - Huey's eight-year old brother who wants nothing more than to live the life of a gangsta rapper

Robert and Riley (Huey's younger brother) seem to live day-by-day and get caught up in the superficialness of the world around them while Huey is very socially- and politically-aware, more than the average ten year old. In many episodes ("The Fried Chicken Flu",) Grandad and Riley should be thankful that Huey doesn't live with his head in the clouds. They are joined by a host of misfit supporting characters, the most colorful of which (and my new favorite) is Uncle Ruckus. He's a hoot in season three and a walking contradiction if there ever was one.

The show's animation is beautiful to watch. McGruder is a huge fan of anime and manga which is evident not only in the facial features of the characters, but primarily during the exaggerated action sequences.

I've watched "The Boondocks" for a few years now on Adult Swim (at least off and on) but after watching the uncut and uncensored version on DVD, I am just amazed that 95% of the script isn't bleeped out. Not only is the "n" word used liberally, but so is the "F" word and the "SH" word and so on. I have to point out that none of these words offend me and they are used in the show only as they would be used in real-life situations within the culture the show portrays. The writing is very real and never seems to come from a fake place.

Much like "South Park," the nice thing about "The Boondocks" is that no one is safe from criticism and ridicule and mockery. McGruder pokes fun at all races, economic classes, celebrities, and even the President of the United States himself. The host of celebrity voices just adds to the overall awesomeness of this series: Regina King, John Witherspoon, Ed Asner,  and Samuel L. Jackson, just to name a few.

"The Boondocks: The Complete Third Season" is a must-have for the thinking person's animation collection.
