Show: Good Christian Belles Episode(s): Pilot Genre: Comedy Starring: Leslie Bibb, Kristin Chenoweth, Annie Potts, Mark Deklin, David James Elliott, Jennifer Aspen, Miriam Shor, Marisol Nichols, Brad Beyer Network: ABC Rating: ( )Grade: A+ Factoid: Based on the book Good Christian Bitches by Kim Gatlin Amanda Vaughn (Leslie Bibb) finds herself a widow after he husband dies in a car accident, found dead in a scandalous position with Amanda’s best friend. The scandal doesn’t end there though as the government swoops in and freezes all the family assets and puts Amanda and her two children out. The only place left to go is home and for Amanda that means returning to Dallas where she was once everyone’s worst nightmare. Can she be forgiven by the God fearing population that never moved on? It’s going to take some work. Stars Leslie Bibb ("Iron Man") as Amanda Vaughn, Kristin Chenoweth ("Pushing Daisies") as Carlene Cockburn, Annie Potts ("Law and Order: Special Victims Unit," "Joan of Arcadia") as Gigi Stopper, Jennifer Aspen ("Rodney") as Sharon Peacham, Miriam Shor ("Swingtown" "Damages") as Cricket Caruth-Reilly, Marisol Nichols ("24") as Heather Cruz, Brad Beyer ("Jericho") as Zack Peacham, Mark Deklin ("Lone Star") as Blake Reilly and David James Elliott ("JAG") as Ripp Cockburn. Even though Good Christian Belles isn’t a revolutionary idea the pilot episode has excellent execution in storytelling and plays out like a condensed version of a big screen film. The main character is introduced in the face of her husbands scandal and must return to her mother’s home in Dallas and once there is confronted by a clique made up off all the girls from high school that she once tortured. They have not forgotten and now that they run the show and the community its an easy set up for a long running rivalry that should work for one or two seasons. The format for the show plays out like a Desperate Housewives sort of deal. It’s a super rich suburban neighborhood, everyone has a secret, and the dialogue is witty and funny. Without a doubt Conservatives will cry Liberal and the show will come under attack for sporting characters that pose as “Christians” who live a double standard. The name change in the show will attest to that. Still, as a pilot all on its own it’s power is that it works as a stand alone with enough of a draw at the end to bring you back for more. I have a feeling that the rivalry between Bibb and Chenoweth on this show will stretch its lifespan out significantly, and it also helps that the show sports a strong supporting cast of diverse characters that live within their own universes yet are never on screen in the grand scheme of things without purpose. I’m not saying I’m going to be hooked on the show but I am saying it’s going to do great in the ratings. As always final judgment is yours. Enjoys. Pictures: |
