Show: Happy Endings Episode(s): Mein Coming Out Genre: Comedy Starring: Elisha Cuthbert, Zachary Knighton, Adam Pally, Casey Wilson, Eliza Coupe, Damon Wayons Jr. Network: ABC Airdate/Time: April 27, 2011 10:00am Rating: ( )Grade: A- BOTTOM LINE: The connection between its' characters and hilarious line-deliveries ultimately make "Mein Coming Out" the best episode so far and a sign of a very promising television series. Many networks attempt to create the new favorite comedy series. CBS has "How I Met Your Mother" and NBC has shows like "Community", "30 Rock" and "The Office". Now, to go along with the wildly successful "Modern Family", ABC is introducing "Happy Endings". In the beginning of the series, "Happy Endings" reveals a group of 6 twenty-something friends whose relationships are questioned after the cancelled wedding of Dave (Zachary Knighton) and Alex (Elisha Cuthbert). The first few episodes of the series felt cliche' and couldn't seem to land its' feet on solid character developments. With most television shows, building great character development usually takes a season or two. For "Happy Endings", it only took four episodes. In the fourth episode "Mein Coming Out", Max (Adam Pally) is struggling to find a fake girlfriend so his parents won't find out that he's gay. With Penny (Casey Wilson) busy with a blind date, the competition is between Alex and the attention-seeking Jane (Eliza Coupe). But as situations rise, Max struggles to keep himself inside the closet, much to the disapproval of his best friend, Dave. Meanwhile, Penny ditches her blind date for an attractive gentleman she meets at the bar. He seems to be the perfect guy until Penny finds out that her dream date might be related to Hitler. Very rarely do television characters jump off the screen while maintaining a sense of reality in their personalities in the way the characters of "Happy Endings" do. It may have taken four episodes, but seeing these charismatic and hilarious characters play off each other is well worth the wait. Perhaps the best character this episode is Brad (Damon Wayons Jr.) who takes a backseat to the drama and delivers his lines perfectly. The connection between its' characters and hilarious line-deliveries ultimately make "Mein Coming Out" the best episode so far and a sign of a very promising television series. "Mein Coming Out" airs Wednesday, April 27th, at 10:00 pm on ABC. |
