Show: Killer Karaoke Episode(s): Pilot Genre: Game Show Starring: Steve-O Network: truTV Airdate/Time: November 23, 2012 9:00pm Rating: ( )Grade: D Steve-O returns to television as the host of the all-new musical game show entitled "Killer Karaoke" which premieres November 23rd on truTV. The show is based off the British series "Sing If You Can" in which contestants attempt to perform karaoke while facing intense situations. Zodiak USA produces the show and is the same company behind two of the network's most popular series - "Hardcore Pawn" and "Lizard Lick Towing." Contestants who make it past the first round of competition will then compete directly on a gigantic turntable where the eventual winner could take home up to $10,000. I have to admit that I was excited to preview an episode, but that excitement soon turned to disappointment. The usual animated Steve-O seemed oddly reserved, nervous, and scripted. Although the show is advertised as a karaoke program, there was simply not much singing going on. Apparently the contestants know their songs by heart since the lyrics are not even shown onscreen for the benefit of viewers. Of course, that really doesn’t matter since the contestants are too busy screaming while taking part in a hot wax session or being dunked into a water tank full of snakes. Something that really disturbed me were the stunts involving living creatures. In one segment, a man had to sing while stepping in various tubs containing maggots, snakes, and scorpions. Obviously we didn’t see any creatures harmed outright, but it would appear difficult to maintain animal safety in such situations. The finale involving a giant turntable fell flat and seemed uninspired compared to prior challenges. The lone highlight of the program was Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snyder serving as the announcer, but even he had the common sense to not appear on camera. It’s extremely difficult to imagine this show maintaining much of an audience or lasting beyond one season. |
