I'm sure everyone over the age of 18 does. Now in its 11th iteration, the Scooby-Doo series has evolved over the decades but managed to still retain the essence of the show. Does this new age Scooby-Doo live up to its predecessors though?</p> <p>It's definitely different, that's for sure. If you're a fan of the classic Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! prepare for some major changes. Gone is the catchy Scooby-Doo theme song, instead replaced by a more ominous and ghostly tune. Then there are the storylines.</p> <p>The DVD contains the first four episodes of the series. Each episode has the gang solving a mystery that is perpetrated by some ghoulish monster, as usual. All the episodes are intertwined though by a mysterious character called Mr. E (Lewis Black). Supposedly there is some bigger mystery afoot although not much can be inferred from the first few episodes.</p> <p>Probably the biggest surprise you'll find out is the whole relationship side story going on. Who would have thought Shaggy and Velma would ever become a couple!? Well, apparently that's the case here. There's always been the whole Fred and Daphne situation as well although they're not really a couple, much to Daphne's disappointment. Much of the episode is devoted to flushing out these storylines and not really focusing on the "monster" as much as the old show did. </p> <p>At its heart though, Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated remains mostly the same show. There are plenty of references to the old version and the final unveiling the crook moment remains unchanged. Also, kudos have to be given to Frank Welker who has been the voice of Fred for the entire series, from 1969 to the present. The man is nothing short of amazing.</p> <p><a href="http://www.twitter.com/Majiesto">Follow me on Twitter @Majiesto</a></p> </div></div></div><h1 id="page-title">Scooby-Doo! He’s got his problems with bullies, his crushes, and a small circle of friends. What little normalcy there is for Duncan goes right out the window when his Father returns to make Duncan his successor exposing Duncan’s secrets to the world. Now Duncan must stand between the human world and the Kaiju world in order to maintain a relative peace. Can Duncan be the hero both sides need?<br />  <br /><strong><em>QUALITY:</em></strong><br /> FireBreather is a CGI film which has the look of those Barbie films that have been coming out periodically, but is a little better produced then Barbie. As this is all computer generated things like grain or soft shots get thrown right out the window. Definition is solid throughout which both enhances the character outline with razor sharp acuteness as well as gives some characters a flawed look (see any Kaiju). Color is solid and texture has its moments of life like quality (see Duncan’s red leather jacket) but there are a couple of spots in the film where oranges tend to smear out. Duncan’s skin color is naturally orange in the film and some of the desert shots which appear reddish orange in hue seem to collide in these few instances. Audio comes at you with a Dolby TrueHD 5.1 soundtrack that’s pretty good though it lacks the capability to really offer a proper surround sound experience through a majority of the film which is a shame seeing as how this is an action film. Still for the demographic FireBreather is shooting for its fans will be satisfied. </p> <p><strong><em>BONUS FEATURES:</em></strong><br /> ~Deleted Scenes- I thought this section was pretty good. One interaction between Duncan and his Mother before prom was one of those beneficial must see moments that I’m sorry to see was omitted form the film. <br /> ~2D Animation Test- Mixing CGI with hand drawn animation here you get a glimpse at what FireBreather would have looked like had it gone hand drawn. Personally I preferred these hand drawn sections and would recommend you to check out this bonus feature to see how cool FireBreather would have looked in 2D.<br /> ~Animatics- Basic storyboard representation. <br /> ~Visual Development</p> <p> </p> </div></div></div><h1 id="page-title">FireBreather</h1><div class="field field-name-field-talents field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Talent(s):&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/talents/kevin-michael-richardson" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Kevin Michael Richardson</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/talents/amy-davidson" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Amy Davidson</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/talents/grey-delisle" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Grey DeLisle</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/talents/jesse-head" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Jesse Head</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/talents/tia-texada" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Tia Texada</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-picture field-type-image field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><img typeof="foaf:Image" src="http://shakefire.com/sites/default/files/styles/picture/public/reviews/1560965h.jpg?itok=tuO686UF" width="640" height="809" /></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-pictures field-type-image field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Other Pictures:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><img typeof="foaf:Image" src="http://shakefire.com/sites/default/files/reviews/1560965bh.jpg" width="500" height="588" /></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-starring field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Starring:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/talents/kevin-michael-richardson" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Kevin Michael Richardson</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/talents/amy-davidson" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Amy Davidson</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/talents/grey-delisle" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Grey DeLisle</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/talents/jesse-head" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Jesse Head</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/talents/tia-texada" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Tia Texada</a></div></div></div> Wed, 23 Mar 2011 16:02:28 +0000 AJ Garcia 16730 at http://shakefire.com http://shakefire.com/review/firebreather-blu-ray#comments FireBreather http://shakefire.com/tv-show/firebreather <div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" property="content:encoded"><p>Duncan Rosenblatt, a half human half Kaiju hybrid, wants to be the average High School student. They have become infused in the bloodstream of every living thing on Earth. Sometimes they lie dormant but on occasion they mutate humans into dangerous monsters known as Evo’s. To stop the Evo’s a government group titled Providence was created (though honestly their a bit rubbish, IMO). When all else fails Providence can rely on their secret weapon, a teenage boy named Rex (voiced by Spy Kids fame Daryl Sabara). What makes Rex so special? Unlike other Evo’s Rex can control the Nanites in his body enabling him to create weapons and transport for himself to help battle the Evo’s. Of course every story must have a villain and that villain is named Van Kleiss (voiced by Troy Baker of Dragon Ball and Bleach fame among other major voice over jobs he‘s taken), an Evo who can partially control his powers and who believes this transformation makes himself and any other Evo that joins him the next evolutionary chain in the human race and far superior to the normal humans (Magneto anyone). With the help of super cool Agent 6 (voiced by Wally Kurth super soap opera guy), Dr. Holiday (voiced by Grey DeLise of The Clone Wars among the hundreds of other major voice over jobs she’s been a part of), Bobo Haha (voiced by John DiMaggio of Futurama fame) a talking chimpanzee with bad habits that wields two laser pistols (one of my other favorite characters), and lastly Noah (voiced by Fred Savage who will all should know in some way or another) Rex battles the Evo's and on occasion his own self doubt. Can Rex stop the Evo’s, save humanity, and a find a girlfriend? Tune in to find out. </p> <p>Okay so at first glance I didn’t expect a whole lot from this show. The Man of Action team (Duncan Rouleau, Joe Casey, Joe Kelly, and Steven T. Seagle) who put together Ben 10 and who have also worked as Supervising Producers for the new Spider-Man series Ultimate Spider-Man and developed and wrote a sequence of episodes for the Marvel/Disney XD series Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes series haven’t failed me yet. Gen Rex is no exception. Unlike Ben 10 (which carries a G rating) Rex is rated PG and is all the more action for it which makes the stories more intense, leaves leeway for the show to progress in a more suspense filled manner, and really puts things into perspective while not going over board for the kiddies. As Steven Seagle added in a press conference at Emerald City ComiCon in March of this year, “If parents are comfortable with their kids watching the Clone Wars cartoon, then they should be fine with "Generator Rex." Touche. </p> <p>Story writing is what makes Gen Rex so remarkable. Sure Rex is battling Evo’s every episode but MOA allows the character and the surrounding characters to progress and become fleshed out so well in a way that heightens the show dramatically giving a little piece here and there until by the end of the volume 1 set your invested in the characters as you would be in a live action series and dying to know what comes next. For Rex, who doesn’t quite know who he is due to amnesia, you are along for the ride meeting these side characters who introduce him to a bit of information before being ripped away by Van Kleiss or some other force. Agent 6, basically Rex’s handler, is this awesome double sword wielding character whose all business but who eventually begins to look somewhat like a Father figure to the mostly incarcerated Rex (you’ll see) when he’s not kicking some major butt. Basically the show has everything you could want in an action setting and more and even as much as I loved MOA’s Ben 10 this is a huge step up for the creative team. Seriously even if you don’t have kids this is a show you’d have no qualms about owning and following. I highly recommend. Enjoy. <br />  </p> </div></div></div><h1 id="page-title">Generator Rex</h1><div class="field field-name-field-talents field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Talent(s):&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/talents/wally-kurth" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Wally Kurth</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/talents/jk-simmons" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">J.K. Substitute in storylines with Tombstone, the New Enforcers, Hammerhead, Silvermane, and Silver Sable and you’ve got the general idea of what’s covered in this volume. Once again the multiple storylines are handled with great aplomb. There’s even an episode (“Gangland”) that takes place in and around an opera house on Valentine’s Day. The fight scenes are choreographed to the music from the opera and it’s done surprisingly well for a TV cartoon. That’s not to disparage the world of animation by any stretch. I love animated stories and it can be a terrific medium for superb storytelling. I was simply pleasantly surprised to see something this solid from a TV “kids” cartoon. Someone’s been watching his old Looney Tunes.</p> <p>So as before, this is a great series for the Spidey fan, but I can’t recommend it solely on the basis of the price you’re charged for only three episodes. Wait for the full season 2 release.</p> </div></div></div><h1 id="page-title">The Spectacular Spider-Man</h1><div class="field field-name-field-talents field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Talent(s):&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/talents/josh-keaton" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Josh Keaton</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/talents/lacey-chabert" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Lacey Chabert</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/talents/joshua-lebar" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Joshua LeBar</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/talents/grey-delisle" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Grey DeLisle</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/talents/james-arnold-taylor" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">James Arnold Taylor</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-picture field-type-image field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><img typeof="foaf:Image" src="http://shakefire.com/sites/default/files/styles/picture/public/reviews/SpectacularSpiderMan7_DVD-Box-Art.jpg?itok=iZMkgT7l" width="640" height="867" /></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-starring field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Starring:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/talents/josh-keaton" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Josh Keaton</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/talents/lacey-chabert" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Lacey Chabert</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/talents/joshua-lebar" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Joshua LeBar</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/talents/grey-delisle" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Grey DeLisle</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/talents/james-arnold-taylor" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">James Arnold Taylor</a></div></div></div> Mon, 08 Mar 2010 18:08:06 +0000 Jeremy Hunt 16425 at http://shakefire.com http://shakefire.com/review/the-spectacular-spider-man-volume-7#comments The Spectacular Spider-Man: Volume 6 http://shakefire.com/review/the-spectacular-spider-man-volume-6 <div class="field field-name-field-review field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Review:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/reviews/tv-at-home/tv-on-dvd" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">TV on DVD</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-is-exclusive field-type-list-boolean field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Exclusive?:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-grade field-type-number-decimal field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Grade:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">2.80</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Tags:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/tags/dvd" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">DVD</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/tags/cartoon" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">cartoon</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/tags/spider-man" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Spider-Man</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/tags/spectacular" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">spectacular</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" property="content:encoded"><p>The spectacular Spider-Man is back in action with a new collection from season two of the cartoon series. Actually, “collection” might not be the best word in this case, as this DVD has only three episodes on it. That’s right: in keeping with the previous “volumes,” this one is short on the content and even shorter on the special features.</p> <p>While I really dig the way this show is handling the overall Spider-Man universe, I can’t stand the way Sony is releasing the episodes in such piecemeal fashion. I suppose there must be an audience for these three-episode DVDs, but if I were you, I’d steer clear until the season collections come out. Season 1 is already out and is only two dollars more (on Amazon.com) than the individual volumes. It makes absolutely no sense to me, but I guess that’s why Sony’s making the big bucks and I’m just reviewing their stuff.</p> <p>At any rate, the writers of the show are doing a great job of juggling a ton of story threads throughout the Spidey world and that skill is on display here. You get Spider-Man’s on-going battle with the underworld, a surprisingly nuanced showdown with Sandman, J. Jonah Jameson’s storyline with his astronaut son, John…and of course all the necessary drama from Peter Parker’s high school life. The pace of the show is a bit rushed and frantic at times, but on the whole, all the different threads are woven together quite well. Oh yeah and Venom shows up again too, for those of you who love the big black baddie.</p> <p>So once again, let’s review for the exam: solid cartoon adaptation of a comic book hero, terrible bang-for-your-buck.You make the call.</p> </div></div></div><h1 id="page-title">The Spectacular Spider-Man</h1><div class="field field-name-field-talents field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Talent(s):&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/talents/joshua-lebar" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Joshua LeBar</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/talents/james-arnold-taylor" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">James Arnold Taylor</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/talents/grey-delisle" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Grey DeLisle</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/talents/lacey-chabert" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Lacey Chabert</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/talents/josh-keaton" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Josh Keaton</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-picture field-type-image field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><img typeof="foaf:Image" src="http://shakefire.com/sites/default/files/styles/picture/public/reviews/70129066.jpg?itok=DPPb1um0" width="640" height="873" /></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-starring field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Starring:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/talents/joshua-lebar" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Joshua LeBar</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/talents/james-arnold-taylor" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">James Arnold Taylor</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/talents/grey-delisle" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Grey DeLisle</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/talents/lacey-chabert" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Lacey Chabert</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/talents/josh-keaton" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Josh Keaton</a></div></div></div> Mon, 08 Mar 2010 17:45:53 +0000 Jeremy Hunt 16424 at http://shakefire.com http://shakefire.com/review/the-spectacular-spider-man-volume-6#comments
