Lars P. Winther Talks 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2' and Filming in Atlanta

The Georgia filmed Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is about to open in theaters nationwide and Shakefire was at the red carpet premiere at the Fox Theatre in downtown Atlanta where we had the opportunity to talk to the film's first assistant director, Lars P. Winter, who discussed the various filming locations in Atlanta, working in the city, and even a little tease about Marvel's next upcoming film that is about to begin shooting in Atlanta.

Shakefire (SF): What can you tease fans about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 in comparison to the first film?

Lars P. Winther (LPW): This film is definitely a more emotional film. It’s about family and the Guardians sticking with each other. That’s kinda the core theme of the film.

SF: How was it filming in Atlanta? I know most of it was at Pinewood Studios…
LPW: Yeah. Well this is my fourth film here. I did the first Ant-Man, Captain America: Civil War, Guardians, and I’m doing Ant-Man and the Wasp now. So me personally I’ve had a ton of experience here. For the movie, it was easy for us because again we were at Pinewood. Mostly it’s a space movie. We only had three days of location work. We shot up in Cartersville for a day, which you’ll see in the movie. We did some helicopter shots out in Cartersville and then we shot at the Dairy Queen out at the Stone Canyon area there. Then we also shot at the convention center by the Atlanta airport. We built a bunch of sets there.

But yeah, working in Atlanta has been great for us at Marvel because we have a core group of crew people locally now that work with us and they all kinda know the drill. The stages at Pinewood are phenomenal. They take care of us here. You guys have some pretty good restaurants, which is also good. And there’s a direct flight black to LA which is also good for me because I have kids.

SF: What do you like the most about Atlanta?
LPW: First of all it’s easy to get in and out of. It’s a big city; it’s got everything. It’s got great restaurants, great places to live. You’ve got 60 sound stages here now so plenty of places to put a big budget film. You’ve got various locations to shoot. You can shoot obviously plenty of woods. Like right now we’re doing Ant-Man and the Wasp and we’re shooting San Francisco for Atlanta, which is a little tricky but we’ll figure it out. They can handle the film community. They know how to handle us, and they take good care of us.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 opens nationwide this Friday, May 5, 2017.
