HBO Ends 'In Treatment' in Current Form

HBO has ended In Treatment after three seasons in its current form.

The series, starring Golden Globe winner Gabriel Byrne and based on an Israeli format, debuted in January 2008 as a half-hour drama running five nights a week. Running the series as a strip, however, did not pay off, and its format was changed for Seasons 2 and 3, when it ran back-to-back episodes two days a week.

"It's true that we have no plans to continue with In Treatment as previously formatted," an HBO spokesperson said. "However, we are in continued conversations with the executive producers to find another way to continue telling these rich stories."

The critical favorite had been a low ratings performer for HBO, with its Season 3 finale averaging 279,000 viewers, down considerably from its series premiere of 446,000 viewers.

In Treatment, produced and developed by Rodrigo Garcia, revolved around psychotherapist Paul Weston and his weekly sessions with patients in addition to his time with his own therapist.

Byrne earned two best actor Emmy nominations, with Dianne Wiest picking up the supporting actress trophy and Glynn Turman winning guest actor in a drama in 2008. The drama won the WGA Award in 2009 for best new series.
