Liu Yifei to Star in Disney's Live-Action 'Mulan'

Disney has cast Chinese actress Liu Yifei as the titular character in its upcoming live action Mulan film, The Hollywood Reporter has announced.

The news comes at the end of a worldwide search for the film's lead in which the studio saw nearly 1,000 candidates for the role. Yifei, who is also known as "Fairy Sister" in China, was chosen for the role because of her complete package of acting ability, martial arts skill, and star quality. In China, Yifei's career has quickly taken off as she was named one of the New Four Dan Actresses in 2009, which refers to the most bankable young actresses in China. In 2012, she won the Best Actress award at the 5th Macau International Movie Festival for her role in The Assassins. More recently she appeared opposite Emile Hirsch in The Chinese Widow.

Niki Caro will direct the live-action Mulan. Her previous credits include The Zookeeper's WifeMcFarland, USA, and the award-winning Whale RiderMulan is currently looking to be release in 2019.
