The horror genre has gotten stale over the years as films begin to find formulas that work and then stick with them until they are bled dry. Every year there seems to be another Saw or Paranormal Activity spewing forth. Where’s the creativity? What happened to taking chances? The Cabin in the Woods is the answer we have all been looking for. What starts out as an innocent vacation to a remote cabin in the woods for a group of sex driven young adults soon turns into something far more sinister and devilish. Unknown passages, hidden cameras, and mysterious monsters are only the tip of the iceberg. This is one cabin that holds more secrets than you can imagine.
There has been a lot of mystery surrounding The Cabin in the Woods and rightly so. This is a film best experienced with a fresh palate, although I already fear that I have said too much. Written by director Drew Goddard and sci-fi legend Joss Whedon, The Cabin in the Woods has a familiar horror style with a new age twist. I’ll leave it to you to find out what exactly that twist is.
Goddard, who worked previously on J.J. Abrams Cloverfield, and Whedon beautifully craft an intricate world surrounding this group of friends. There’s Curt (Chris Hemsworth), the muscular jock of the group, and his cheerleader-esque girlfriend Jules (Anna Hutchinson). Then there’s Holden (Jesse Williams), the good guy friend of the jock who’s trying to get with Dana (Kristen Connolly), the goody-two-shoes of the film. Finally there’s Marty (Fran Kranz), the token pothead comic relief character. Each of these characters and their respective roles impact the film in more ways than one.
The Cabin in the Woods is unlike any other horror film out there. It’ll draw audiences in with its mystery and will keep you on the edge of your seats, wondering what the next big thing the film will throw at you. It’s a difficult movie to describe, and one you just have to see to believe. Trust me, the experience is well worth your time.
