“American Crime” is a new TV drama that is set to make its debut during the upcoming 2014-2015 fall season on ABC. The show takes place in Modesto, California and will center on class, race, and gender politics. A married couple is murdered and the effects are being felt across several intersecting storylines. Shakefire had the chance to watch and review the pilot episode before its public air date later this year.

The show is filled with a cast of very talented and seasoned actors, but the show is bogged down by clichés and lacks any real direction. The overall plot was easy to follow, but some of the storylines were pointless and felt forced to make sure every group was “represented.” They attempt to push the envelope in every way possible, but ended up making the whole show feel unnatural and a big clustered mess that felt pointless. There are other crime dramas out there more worth your time with better writing. I can appreciate how they attempt to try something new, but a lot of work is needed in how it is presented. “American Crime” is a total skip and for those reasons, I am giving this show a “D.”
