Charlie Chan was a popular fictional detective in the early thirties and forties. There have been many adaptations of the character and many film actors have taken on his role. Warner Bros. has compiled four of the character’s later films into the Charlie Chan Collection.

Shadows Over Chinatown, Docks of New Orleans, Shanghai Chest, and The Golden Eye have been restored from their original print to make up the collection. The set is primarily geared toward those people who grew up with Charlie Chan as part of their childhood and want to re-experience his films, with Sidney Toler starring in the titular role in Shadows Over Chinatown and Roland Winters taking over for the other three.

Unfortuantely, the Charlie Chan Collection is the absolute bare minimum in terms of content. You get the four films on four DVDs and that’s it. There are no special features or anything else of that matter. The Golden Eye is actually in the public domain now so really, you’re only purchasing three films, although the quality is much better than anything you can probably find online.

It doesn’t really matter, though. The Charlie Chan Collection is for fans who want to add these B-movie films to their catalogue. For anyone else, it’ll probably come off as an overpriced waste of money.
