Emily Bell is a singer/songwriter from Austin, TX. Her debut album, “In Technicolor,” was released on May 3rd. Her sound is a mix of Blues, 60’s rock and roll, a bit of country, and pop. Overall, her album is unlike anything in the modern mainstream music, but needed some improvements to make a bigger impact in the music world.

Her instrumentals were very catchy and I loved the whole nostalgic vibe. Her music would appeal to both younger and older audiences if given the chance. Also, the vocals fit perfectly with the whole feel of the album and she has great range. There was also a good variety and wise song choices on the album to keep things interesting and unpredictable. However, I did have a major gripe with the lyrics. They felt juvenile, pointless, and made little sense at times. If the lyrics were better and more professionally written, I think the album would have appealed to me even more.

I liked most of “In Technicolor” and do recommend checking it out, but ignore the lyrics as much as you can. “Back to the way I Was” was not as bad lyrically, but the rest of the album felt childish. I think if she can improve her lyrics, Emily will become a star in the music industry. She has the look, the sound, and uniqueness to become a mainstream success, but has to work on her lyrics. For those reasons, I am giving this album a “D+.”
