Last year Nickelodeon debuted their holiday special, It’s A SpongeBob Christmas! The entire episode was done in stop-motion and featured SpongeBob delivering holiday cheer across Bikini Bottom while Plankton schemes an evil plan to destroy Christmas.
While the DVD has been available for a while, Nickelodeon has decided to pair the episode with a few extra gifts this season. Included in the package are a coloring book with crayons, poster, and sticker sheet so it’s perfect for kids.
The Christmas special is pretty decent itself as it’s pretty cool to see SpongeBob in a different light as a stop-motion animation as opposed to its typical cartoon animation. There are also a few musical numbers in the episode which are well done and add to the holiday theme. It’s very much in the same vein as the classic Rankin/Bass stop-motion Christmas specials like Rudolf and The Year Without a Santa Claus.
The $19.99 MSRP seems a little expensive for a single episode and a few extra goodies, but if you can find a decent deal, it’s well worth it. Besides, can you really put a price on the smile of a young SpongeBob fan as they open the gifts inside?
