Justice League: Gotham City Breakout is the sixth direct-to-video animated film from the LEGO DC Comics Super Heroes series. As the title suggests, all the nefarious villains locked away in Arkham manage to break free after Batman reluctantly takes a much needed vacation away from Gotham, leaving Superman in charge of handling the city’s criminals. Even with his awesome array of powers, however, things quickly get out of hand. Meanwhile Batman has his own share of problems that turn his vacation into a mission of its own.
The already cute animations of Gotham City Breakout are made cuter by the fact that everything is in LEGO. The film is filled with batty puns and humor suitable for a younger audience, but adults will still get a kick out of it as well. It’s no The LEGO Movie, but it’s entertaining nonetheless. The film boasts some top voice acting talent too, including Troy Baker as Batman, Nolan North as Superman, Tara Strong as Harley Quinn, and John DiMaggio as Deathstroke. And that’s just the main cast. There’s even more characters from the entire DC roster who make an appearance throughout so it’s great to see them all in minifig form.
Speaking of minifigs, the Blu-ray comes with an exclusive limited edition Nightwing minifig. The disappointing news is that that’s unfortunately all the extra content it comes with. There are no real bonus features aside from a few trailers. Still, Gotham City Breakout is an enjoyable film that’s fun for the whole family. If you’ve seen any of the other LEGO DC Comics Super Heroes animated films than you know exactly what you’re in for.
