A good play on words can be a fun thing, such as the group that goes by the name, Mime Game. This alternative rock band from Kansas City, MO has released a new EP called “do your work”. There are a total of 4 songs on this EP, “Do Your Work”, “Murderer”, “Son”, and “Do You”. Total play time for this EP comes in at 14 minutes 29 seconds long with the longest track being “Do Your Work” at 4:15 and the shortest “Son” at 2:55. It might be a short EP to listen to but it has a lot of emotion in the songs. Not a sad, sappy, or unwanted emotion that would make me turn off the player but the kind of emotion that lets me know where the band stands with their music. Which is a strong, little in your face, but still fun stance being taken.

Mime Game has a semi pop beat being played in their music, one that is anything but a pop rock song but one that is just snappy and fun. When the EP starts with “Do Your Work” I actually thought something was wrong with this new computer that I just bought 2 weeks ago. Just as the song starts to play there is a slight pause in the song, almost as if the computer froze or is going slow making the song pause, but when I played it again, and again, and even on the player the song pauses in the same spots. So it's supposed to happen, maybe it's just me but this is something I just didn't like about the song. It had me thinking something was going wrong with my computer and it's just odd to hear these pauses that are abrupt and unexpected.

Aside from that one aspect, the songs are structured with almost mild aggressive lyrics. The vocals are soft, at times a little high pitched, but unbroken and never going off key. I was more impressed with the track “Murderer”, considering that on the bands Facebook info page they claim to be a band worried about having fun where this song seems to have some depressing lyrics. It's beats are somewhat upbeat where the tempo stays quick, it's just the lyrics that don't have the upbeat feel to them. There where a few moments in the songs that I could hear a hint of some folk sounds being played. It's not a lot where the band would have to be labeled a folk band, but they do have the sound in their songs. There's also some easy to learn lyrics that will allow someone to pick up on them and sing along with the songs. At times there is a repetition with the lyrics in the song “Son” but not enough that the song gets annoying but it's enough to notice that he does say “No, no, no” a bit much. “Do your work” wasn't that bad of an EP, I think if I had more songs I could get a better handle on the band, but with only 4 songs they seem to be on a band that likes to have fun with their music while also not doing anything too wild.
