Rolin Humes “Welcomes You To The Penultimate Supper 6/8” is a conglomeration of styles from pop to jazz to blues, to contemporary and even rock. Not quite sure how they do it but the band reminded me of Billy Joel, Randy Newman, Peter Cincotti, and Elton John all rolled in to one with the waning allure of a Vegas music show.

The album consists of 7 tunes at just under 49 minutes. Some of the songs range from just under 4 minutes to a bit over 18 minutes dipping in and out of genres faster then a kid perusing through a record store, but in the end almost all of it is great.

The opening number What’s Your Big Secret is a piano driven tune that oozes Elton John. Very crisp sounding, every instrument getting their own lane to bring the songs together as a whole. Piano chimes in well, guitar is so fine you can hear every strum, and drums are so clear you can practically make counts on all facets of the set. Stand out on the track is the vocal/piano tandem. Very nice.

Hero is a pretty cool song. Guitar is very lively bounding around the track accompanying piano while drums supply a thriving beat to the track. Again the music is very sectioned with every instrument on the track shining through. In the end though the track starts to grow stale by the back end.

Freedom is another song that I had some issues with. It starts off strong but has a really repetitive quality to it. I guess I just wasn’t that in to the chorus and it seemed to repeat far more then needed.

The remainder of the album is flawless in my opinion. Great vocals, theatrical drum and guitar qualities (you’ll see), a great drive by piano, and a fine exercise of genre switch ups, especially in the final track.

I won’t say the album is perfect, but I do think that if you listen to the album enough even the flaws, if you personally find any, will straighten themselves out in time. A great relaxing album with retro touches driven by a current progression. Be sure to check the album out in its entirety over at the bands Bandcamp Page. Enjoy.
