Star Trek (BLU-RAY)

Star Trek

On Blu-Ray:
Tuesday, October 19, 2010
Running Time:
2 Hours, 6 Minutes

J.J. Abrams' "good luck charm" Greg Grunberg had to turn down a role in this film due to other commitments. However, Grunberg was worked into the movie during post-production, voicing James Kirk's step-father.

5 years ago if you told me that I would not only watch but thoroughly enjoy a Star Trek movie, I would have told you that you are an idiot (no offense to hypothetical 5 year younger you).  JJ Abrams somehow managed to breathe new life into a failing and often laughed at franchise and turn it into a commercially successful and accessible blockbuster.

Incredible.  The picture is better than I expected for a fast moving, high-CGI movie.  The sound will rattle your house as if lightning struck through your living room.

NASA News, commentary, featurettes on casting, behind-the-scenes and more, deleted scenes, gag reel, trailers, a digital copy and a game trial.

The first thing I have to point out about the free included game trial is that it is for XBox 360, which makes absolutely not sense on a Blu-Ray as the 360 does not support the format, only the Playstation 3 does.  This is especially perplexing as the game IS available on PS3.  The NASA News feed is slow and a bit irritating, definitely not something you will return to.  The commentary is amusing delving into early scripts, stories and cuts of the movie and the inspiration behind various plots and characters.

If you are still staying away from this movie because of the connotation that "Star Wars" brings with it, I ask you to throw that out and give it a chance.  If you are a fan of big budget action movies with storylines that actually hold up, I highly recommend picking this up as soon as possible.
