When I was in high school I thought I was a big shot for having a brand new Ford Mustang to drive around. For me that was a big deal, in fact most of the school thought so too considering it was my first car and it was a muscle car. However, I have nothing on the indie pop band The Big Sweet. This boy pop band are no longer in high school but with their new and third album " Bicycle Nights" getting released, it means that their first two albums where made while in high school. That means while my car was cool, being in a band that has a record deal and albums released is a whole lot cooler.
Now I didn't know that information when I first listened to the album but it was because of me listening to the album that I went digging around the internet to find out about the band. Why I did is simple, the band sounded very young as well as sounding like this was their first album. I was wrong on the album count but I wasn't wrong on the age of the band. They are young and their music has a young sound. My first impression was this band needs to gain some more experience before having an album out, which since this is their third album makes me wonder just how inexperienced their first two albums where. They are ok, but just mildly ok and that's pushing it. I might not be able to fault them for having the album released, in fact it's quite the accomplishment, but I can't say they are a good band either.
This music sounds like they got together after learning to play their instruments and decided that they were going to make music that sounds like all the other pre-teen pop music out there. Is this the reason? I don't know and won't know really, but the sound is that they want to play music to get famous, make money, and probably get girls. Which is also fine, those would be some reasons most bands play, but the music has no originality to it. The vocals are soft, timid in fact, the lyircs are weak, and though they might say they were influenced by bands like the Beatles I don't hear that in their music. I can see pre-teens going for this music but for me it just sounds too much like they are using the music for other ends rather than allowing their sound to get them to those ends
