The popular graphic novel XIII has been made into a video game, a film, and now and full blown television series starring Stuart Townsend in the titular role as a top secret agent with amnesia looking for answers. The series originally aired back in 2011, and FUNimation has finally brought it to home video in the US.

XIII is 24 meets The Bourne Identity. Essentially XIII (Townsend) is a secret agent with amnesia who has been betrayed by the government and locked away in a retention camp. After managing to escape, he begins searching for who he really is. It’s a game of cat and mouse as he struggles to find people he can trust while putting together the pieces of the puzzle that is his life.

The series directly follows the events of the TV film XIII: The Conspiracy so it may be confusing and difficult to follow along if you’re new to the franchise. The first episode feels like you’re constantly playing catch up in what’s happening and offers little backstory. Thankfully things find their rhythm in later episodes.

XIII has its fair share of thrilling moments and while its complicated story may turn away some people, it’s engaging enough to give you that “just one more episode” mindset.
