Artist: Ben Rudnick and Friends Album: Live in Lexington Members: Ben Rudnick, Arnie Ashford, Jared Steer, Mark Yacovone, John Zevos Label: Bartlett Ave. Records Tracks: 25 Type: LP Release Date: August 30, 2011 Discs: 1 Rating: ( )Grade: B Ranging from light folk, bluegrass, calypso and rock, Ben Rudnick and Friends bring family, music and fun together in their own unique style. Live in Lexington, Under the Copper Beach is packed with good time tunes for everyone. Now, I’ll admit, I’m not the target audience for this album. I don’t have kids and I’m not in the market for family friendly fare, but I couldn’t help but tap my toes to the tunes of this disc. It has a bunch of originals but also a number of cover songs and public domain tunes like "Skip to My Lou", "Hava Nagila", "Jambalaya", "Hey Good Lookin’", "Walk of Life", and "When the Saints Go Marching In". With a sound reminiscent of the Grateful Dead, Ben Rudnick and Friends are an incredibly musically talented bunch. Their original tunes will probably quickly becomes family favorites for the kids, and the entire album makes a great soundtrack for family gatherings and cookouts. As an adult, I find much of the album to be forgettable, and I don’t think I’ll be itching to listen to these songs again and again, but I’ll hang on to it for when I need to entertain my nephew because I’m sure he’ll love it, especially "Monkey and the Engineer". I mean, it’s a song about monkeys and trains, what could be more awesome than that? |
