Artist: Brokencyde Album: Will Never Die Members: Mikl, Se7en, Phat J, Antz Genre: Other Label: Breaksilence Records Tracks: 18 Type: LP Release Date: November 9, 2010 Discs: 1 Rating: ( )Grade: B- Let’s get the obvious out of the way. Brokencyde is a band that you either really really love or you hate to the extreme (just read the reviews over at Amazon). The band is labeled Crunkcore which combines Crunk, Hip Hop, and Screamo. A combination that seems to be the deciding factor coming second only to the bands heavy handed use of misogynistic lyrics and total promotion of drink and drug use. To me the band has the combined draw of old school controversialists such as Too Short, 2 Live Crew, The Ghetto Boys mixed with new school acts like The Kottonmouth Kings, HED (PE), and 3OH!3, especially with this new album. In any case the bands sound has definitely improved production-wise. If you’ve never been a fan of Brokencyde no doubt this album will not change your mind. Again, after reading some of the laughable negative comments on Amazon for their albums, most of which sound like people who have caught one of the bands video’s on youtube or listened to the Amazon samples, apparently that’s all it takes. Yes the lyrical is vulgar and degrading to women but hip hop/gangster rap wasn’t created without breaking a few eggs and it doesn’t seemed to have stopped other bands from having the same message and still going on to become successful and well accepted. Face it, it’s the Screamo part that really puts the nail in the coffin. The album starts off with a skit and then the first two tracks Dis Iz Rager Dude and Always Go Hard really incorporates the Screamo deal but the tracks music production is the key to every Brokencyde fans obsession. Combine the crunk-ish autotune vocals, the screaming, the intensity of the vocal delivery and the music just coming at you so heavy you can’t help but get caught up in the moment. Or you can. Obviously. The fourth track on the album sounds an awful lot like a Far East Movement track with the screaming bits buried in the background making the track a prime candidate for clubbing without blowing out your audiences eardrums. Track to avoid if you hate the screamo stuff would be Teach me How To Scream, again obviously. Track eight Money Hungry Hoe is yet another track that sounds like a FEM number that’s club friendly. Daddy X makes an appearance on yet another Brokencyde track, this time on High Timez, of course, which features a reggae vibe musically with a legitimate flow and smooth chorus. Da House Party is the album’s single which sounds horribly like Ke$ha’s Tik Tok. Was this an intentional jab at the another act a lot of people are calling one of the worst ever or were these guys just not thinking. Track twelve, My Gurl, is a new move for the band attempting, successfully I add, an R&B feel. Track fifteen, Goose Gogglez, has all the charm lyrically of a 2 Live Crew track. That’s not bad, for fans of 2 Live Crew, and has the workings of a club track if not for, you guessed it, unfocused screaming. The album ends with Sunshine which sounds like someone threw, really hard, the sensibilities of pop and crunk-core together and the two genre’s started to choke one another out. Make with it what you will. Again, if your not a fan because you know about Brokencyde and consider them to be one of the worst acts in music right now you’d do best to do what you’ve always done and watch one of their video’s and then write a review on the entirety of their album. If you can stand Screamo, Crunk, somewhat unintelligible lyrics then you should definitely check this band out. I unashamedly own their previous albums and have to say the draw for me is the f**k all attitude these kids have going for them despite how much people hate them. That’s punk as f**k. As always final judgment is yours. Enjoy. Pictures/Covers: |
