Artist: Carly Rae Jepsen Album: Call me Maybe Members: Carly Rae Jepsen Genre: Pop Label: School Boy/Interscope Records Tracks: 1 Type: Single Release Date: February 22, 2012 Rating: ( )Grade: C- Carly Rae Jepsen was born and raised in Mission, British Columbia, Canada. She also appeared and placed third on the TV show “Canadian Idol” during their 5th season in 2007. “Call me Maybe” is her new hit single from her forthcoming second album, which is entitled “Curiosity.” The song has already caught the attention of fellow Canadian Justin Beiber and his girlfriend Selena Gomez. This song is already widely popular in Canada and gets a lot of radio play over Canadian airwaves, but has yet to break the top 10 in the U.S. The song is catchy and does stay in head after hearing it several times on the radio. The lyrics are decent and simple but get repetitive towards the end of the song. The beat and instrumentals are reminiscent of most Taylor Swift songs, but comes off as more pop and watered-down country instead. This song will definitely appeal more to younger pre-pubescent teenage girls than any other group, but I feel that is her target group. Overall, “Call me Maybe” is an okay song, but gets overplayed on Canadian radio stations constantly. She has talent and potential, but Carly Rae Jepsen has to do a lot more to set herself apart from the other females in the always competitive pop genre. Her vocal range felt limited and constrained in the song and did not fully showcase what she is capable of. I do hope to hear more songs from here in the future, but this was not a good song choice as her first single. For those reasons, I am giving this song a” C-.“ |
