Artist: Dymaxion Vehicle Album: Redesign: Fun in Strobes Members: Gothboy Label: Dymaxion Vehicle Tracks: 12 Release Date: March 2, 2012 Rating: ( )Grade: B Dymaxion Vehicle consists of Bill Hemp (aka Gothboy) and various vocalists he has grouped together to work with him and the project started in 2008. Hemp’s influences include the Pet Shop Boys, Depeche Mode, and Erasure. He tries to mix pop, goth, dance, and electronica. “ReDesign – Fun in Strobes” is a remix album of the group’s debut album, “Design,” which was released in January 2011. It was a fun album to listen to, with a couple of exceptions. I loved a majority of the instrumentals and beats on this album. I believe these are the main elements that carried the whole album. My favorite instrumentals were on “Brave new World” and “Deep Red Mahogany.” The whole album had a dance music feel to it, but it was not overwhelming in synthesizers or bass like other electronica artist. “Eulogy” is the only song I felt that could have been left out because it was awkward to listen to and felt like I was in a church or a monastery with monks chanting. With the exception of that song, I really enjoyed the instrumentals. The main thing about this album I didn’t enjoy were the vocals. The lyrics were very thoughtful and well written, but the vocals felt out of place on most of the songs. “Deep red Mahogany” and “Dreams in Argyle” were the only exceptions to this. ‘Deep red Mahogany” felt like a more electronic and raw Lady Gaga song, which I really enjoyed. I just think I would have enjoyed the album more if they chose different vocalists for the songs or if they didn’t have any vocals at all. This was a great dance music album, but the vocals needed either a lot more improvement, different vocalists, or no vocals at all to be an even better album. I would still recommend this album to those that want to dance, but would caution them to ignore the vocals. I am still curious to see what Dymaxion Vehicle wil release in the future, but hope they get the vocalist situation figure out. For those reasons, I am giving this CD a “B” because they instrumentals were really that good to listen to. |
